Winter Storm Warning issued December 30 at 6:43PM EST until January 1 at 10:00AM EST by NWS Baltimore MD/Washington DC ...SIGNIFICANT SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW NEW YEAR'S EVE INTO NEW YEAR'S DAY... .A period of snow, heavy at times, is expected over the Appalachians of western Maryland, eastern West Virginia, and western Virginia beginning late Wednesday afternoon and lasting through Thursday morning. Near-blizzard conditions are possible late Wednesday evening through early Thursday morning, with the worst conditions and highest accumulations most likely along and west of the Allegheny Front. * WHAT... Heavy snow and near-blizzard conditions are expected, with total snow accumulations between 4 and 8 inches. Winds will gust as high as 50 mph. Visibility may drop to one-quarter mile or less at times. Wind chills will fall to as low as 10 degrees below zero. * WHERE... In Maryland, Eastern Garrett and Western Garrett Counties. In West Virginia, Western Grant, Western Mineral, and Western Pendleton Counties. * WHEN... From 4 PM Wednesday to 10 AM EST Thursday. * IMPACTS... Visibilities may drop below one-quarter mile at times due to falling and blowing snow. Whiteout conditions are expected and will make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening. Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions will impact the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... A wave of snow showers may result in a coating to 2 inches of snow along and west of the Allegheny Front through Wednesday morning, prior to the Winter Storm Warning. After a lull, snow will increase in coverage and intensity late Wednesday afternoon. The onset of near-blizzard conditions could be just before midnight on New Year's Eve and continue into the early morning hours of New Year's Day.
